Greasing

In order to remain watertight the O-ring needs to stay pliable and smooth. This means you have to clean it and grease it on a regular basis. There is no need for you to use large amounts of grease, however make sure you use enough of it as the O-ring could become stiff or wear out and could succumb to infiltrations if you use too little. Placing the camera in the housing:

In order to minimize the opening and closing of the housing cover, it is highly recommended that you use an xD Picture Card with a large amount of memory. I know this goes without saying but make sure your battery is fully charged. Also be sure to insert a new silica gel bag and make sure the long glued section of the silica gel bag is facing inward before you close the housing.

Checking the Functions

Once you've placed the camera in the protector, it is very important to make sure that all buttons, including the shutter and zoom lever are in working order. Next, you need to make sure that the camera is properly inserted inside the case and does not shake or wobble. When using your camera with the housing, keep it away from high temperatures and intense humidity and make sure you don't drop it.

Infiltration Test

Now that you have completed the few steps listed above, the time has now come for you to test the housing. All you need to do is slowly immerse the protector in a tank of water and check that no water actually comes in. First, immerse it for 3 seconds and pill it out of the water. If the O-ring is damaged and not properly functioning, I could be enough for water to actually come in. If everything appears to be ok, immerse it for 30 seconds and check. Lastly immerse it for 3 minutes and put the various button to check that everything is in perfect order and that there are no leaks.

It is best to do it in an air-conditioned humidity-free and brightly lit room. The bathroom is usually the best place because it normally has goo lighting and less dust than in other rooms. It is especially true in resort hotels.

What if my housing is leaking?

First of all, don't panic! If a leak occurs during the infiltration test, slowly pull out the camera out of the water. NEVER yank it out of the water. Open the cover very carefully to prevent he camera from getting wet and go over the procedure again from the start. If infiltration occurs again, it could mean that you need to replace your O-ring with a new one. It is always recommended to have a couple spare ones with you just in case.

In case of infiltration, take out your camera and dry it off, also take out the batteries and memory device and dry them as needed.

"Just Common Sense" Tips For Diving With Your Underwater Camera

Sometimes a dive is a once in a life time adventure and you are absolutely going to want to capture and save that underwater experience to share with loved ones and brag to friends. As they say "A picture is worth a thousand words." So here are some tips for before and during the time when you discover the splendor underwater. Here are some simple yet useful tips to get you started in your underwater photography experience:

1. Read the user's manual for your specific underwater or water proof camera make note of the depth and how long your camera can withstand the underwater pressure. With the waterproof camera you will need to purchase an underwater housing. Get acquainted with the various modes your camera offers and when to use them.

2. Work on perfecting your diving and buoyancy skills underwater, splashing around and fast moves will scare the marine life you are trying to photograph. Always respect your underwater environment, we want the future generations to take pleasure in its mysterious beauty also.

3. If your camera has an underwater mode be sure to position your camera to that mode, do not forget to turn on the flash. The deeper you go the less light you have, the more color is washed out. Some underwater photographers will purchase an external strobe/flash. Use of flashes and different lens may be a whole other article that I will leave to the professionals.

4. If using the underwater housing, practice on land to get the feel for taking pictures with the housing on the camera. It may seem heavy and clunky at first but I am sure you will get used to it.

5. Get close to your subject 12 - 18", water reduces contrast, color, and sharpness therefore the less water between you and your subject the better! * Unless it is a great White Shark in this case I suggest you swim away very fast.

6. Shoot your subject upward towards the light not down into the murky depths. As on land try to have the sun to your back. Try several different angles. Do not just take one shot and hope it turns out okay. Pretend you are the professional photographer and your subject is the super model. Click, click, click, just have fun with it. The great thing about a digital camera is you can see if it was a keeper or the kind you throw back. You can hit the delete button.

I cannot profess to be an expert at any of these tips, they are only ideas I have picked up reading about underwater photography that sounded smart to me. You will find me and my underwater camera at the pool taking underwater pictures of the grandkids. So join an underwater photography forum, take classes at your local college and learn from others mistakes. Even though I am not a diver I have purchased the underwater as opposed to the waterproof camera. They are made compact, rugged, affordable, and easy to use on either wet or dry land. It can be dropped in a mud puddle or left out in the rain overnight when camping with no harm done. I personally can attest to the damage done to a digital camera left out on the picnic table when a surprise rain shower happens overnight, it just never works the same as it did before that fateful night. Who knows someday I just may get the urge to see what lies beyond in the big ocean of blue.

Please listen to me when I say that even waterproof cameras cannot withstand underwater photography. To be waterproof is to resist the water in certain levels, submerging in under the water to get the perfect shot is like throwing it out of the window expecting a pick-up truck to pass by and run over it.

Now if you’re really serious about using an underwater digital camera to capture those wacky and funny moments underwater, I suggest that you buy specialty cameras.

There are rarely underwater digital cameras, as cameras are electronic and cannot withstand water and water pressure. The closest electronics has ever got to producing underwater digital cameras are producing underwater casings for digital cameras. These casing will turn your conventional digital camera into an underwater digital camera.

If you are shooting with your underwater digital camera, you need to take note of a few things to help you come up with the best images underwater.

Remember that as you farther under water, light diffuses. This means that your underwater digital camera will produce images darker than those images you took while on land – this is because of the light diffusion the red spectrum seems darker. To avoid this, use white balance come up with natural colors. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect.
